Uptime Symposium Explores Modularity and Efficiency in Appliance Deployment

Uptime is critical in the data center, as it serves to support the data and computing needs of the enterprise. So critical is this element that it warrants a symposium to enable data center professionals to come together to share best practices, learn new information and examine case studies for improving the overall appliance deployment process. 

In its seventh year, the Uptime Institute Symposium drew as many as 1,700 data center professionals to Santa Clara, Calif. This year’s event also featured a large area dedicated exclusively to Modular Data Center Solutions. NEI (News - Alert), as featured in this blog post, took part in the event, showing its D-Series 380V DC platform solutions to demonstrate its expertise in the data center appliance deployment space. 

The show focused on two main themes: modularity and efficiency, both of which continue to be priorities within the data center environment. Interestingly, modularity has not always been associated with efficient designs when it comes to the data center. Keynotes shared by both eBay (News - Alert) and IO suggest the trend has changed, and IO even has the real-world success to support its claims. 

IO CEO George Slessman shared the benefits of the IO.Anywhere modular data center platform, expanding on the success of modularity. The IO team demonstrated the flexibility and control in their DCIM by creating a live unauthorized entry into a secure module at their Phoenix location. When the entry occurred, Slessman received a visual alert pushed out by the DCIM in real time. While on stage, he simply transferred the workload to another module, resolving the intrusion without impacting productivity.

According to Dean Nelson, vice president of Global Foundation Services (GFS) at eBay, the company recently completed its Project Mercury. A large, state-of-the-art data center project, this initiative includes 12MW of capacity in an area of 7,000 square feet. The project reported impressive PUE numbers inside the footprint, suggesting that liquid cooling on everything down to the chip produces higher transactions per watt. 

Appliance deployment expert NEI joined IO and Validus/ABB to host a breakfast on Wednesday morning. The team further discussed the potential in the future for the Modular Data Center, as well as the efficiency of 380V DC power as a part of this project. 

The demand for data creation, capture, consumption and management is only expected to continue to grow. These data-intensive requirements will drive change within the data center and appliance deployment infrastructure environments to ensure equipment can deliver.
