Building systems for the cloud is can be challenging, requiring access to large quantities of files in rapid fashion. EMC (News - Alert) Corporation has recently unveiled the newest version of its CTA--Cloud Tiering appliance--geared toward tiering and designed to be deployed in public clouds, as well as with archiving capabilities. EMC’s newest CTA is not only able to support Atmos, but also allows for tiering to Amazon S3 as well as a total of 500 million files per appliance.
The key advantage of EMC's newest CTA is that it takes the primary storage space formerly left as inactive, duplicate, unnecessary or non-business related and turns it into reclaimed storage by routing all superfluous storage items to either a public cloud or to archival, or secondary, storage. This opens up primary storage for all-important active data, while requiring less backing up in turn.
In addition, the EMC CTAs can be used as stand-alone items, or as part of a high-availability system without the need for extra clustering software. The CTA / VE edition allows for virtualized server environments by incorporating a VMware ESX ora vSphere server. Those who work with EMC for VNX can use the VNX FAST (News - Alert) Suite with the CTAs and have data automatically tiered within the array itself, or to the best drive based on conditions on the ground.
This combination of huge storage, cost effectiveness, and sheer versatility are features that the EMC CTA counts among its key advantages. Considering the growing importance of the cloud as a whole, having the best possible presence there should prove valuable for anyone looking to enter into the public cloud provider space. The combination of scalability and power evidenced by the Amazon S3 capability, the Atmos support and the sheer bulk of files that can be tiered should prove that the EMC CTA can provide the necessary power, security, and value to give its users the exact appliance deployment solution they crave.
