Oracle Reveals Update to Big Data Appliance X3-2

Oracle (News - Alert) revealed an update to its Big Data Appliance X3-2, a combined server hardware and software offering that the company is pitching to businesses as a cost-effective and simplified alternative to piecing together their own big data processing platforms.

The Big Data Appliance X3-2 hardware/software package offers eight-core Intel (News - Alert) Xeon E5-2600 processors and 18 compute and storage servers with 648 TB raw storage encompassing 288 CPU cores and 1.1 TB of main memory. It also includes the latest release of Cloudera’s Distribution including Apache Hadoop (CDH) and Cloudera Manager, as well as the new Oracle Enterprise Manager plug-in for big data appliances. In addition, it offers updated distributions of Oracle Linux, Oracle Java Development Kit and open source R.

EWeek says this is Oracle's attempt to keep up with enterprise technology rivals, proving to the market they offer the best big data value-add.

“Naturally, the company claims that these latest versions provide more processing power, memory capacity, enhanced integration and management capabilities than previous products,” states the piece. 

Relatedly, appliance deployment provider and Oracle partner NEI (News - Alert) has completely redefined appliance deployment. Because software appliance condenses an application's dependencies in a pre-integrated, self-contained unit, it streamlines software deployment by freeing users from having to resolve potentially complex OS compatibility issues, library dependencies or unwanted interactions with other applications.

The company’s LEAD System addresses the challenges that come with getting applications to market. It improves application deployment whether it is part of a physical or cloud model, and includes solution design, application management and support and maintenance.

Further, NEI’s cloud appliance architecture is based on a software stack that is easily adjusted for performance, secured, deployed and managed remotely. It can be seamlessly integrated into an "image" and ready-made for physical, virtual or cloud deployments.

The virtual deployment model offers a single controlled image that can be used across physical, virtual and cloud deployments.

Regardless of how customers utilize appliance deployment, NEI’s options offer the ability to deploy faster, better and more effective solutions.
