Improve Deep Packet Inspection Using Standard Intel Processors

In part five of this series on deep packet inspection (DPI) by appliance deployment specialist NEI (News - Alert), Director of Field Engineering Austin Hipes says that DPI is now possible using standard server systems like the Intel Platform for Communications Infrastructure (formerly known as ‘Crystal Forest’). The discussion in this part shows that the platform is built on the E5-2600 series Intel (News - Alert) Xeon processor and is scalable from one to 16 cores, with extensive memory and communication channel capabilities.

When the platform is integrated with Intel Communications chipsets and associated communications hardware accelerators, the encryption and compression functions are run externally to the CPU, freeing it up to perform deep packet inspection and application processing. 

In reality, wrote Hipes, “The new platform is designed to replace programming-intense NPUs and improve the deep packet inspection process by providing a higher data throughput rate, simplified programming scheme, and lower overall cost.”

Software developers can speed up their understanding and utilization of this new platform by working with an Intel Intelligent Systems Alliance member like NEI, which specializes in upfront consulting and design services for the storage, security, and telecom markets. The company has been designing DPI-based appliances for more than eight years and security appliances for over a decade.

Some of the key attributes highlighted in this blog post include solution design, system integration, application management, global logistics and support. Regarding solution design, NEI powers solutions for cloud, virtual, and physical system designs, including hardware selection, operating system customization, remote management, and regulatory and compliance certifications. Likewise, with respect to system integration, it offers full manufacturing and system integration capabilities with strict process controls that ensure reliable, repeatable results.

Application management is another area of expertise that can provide software management solutions to monitor the health of a system, perform backups, deliver updates automatically, and manage appliances deployed on a server or network.

In addition, NEI is planning on releasing a wide variety of systems in the next few months. These systems are based on the 89xx-series Intel Communications chipset and the suite encompasses small form factor appliances, ATCA reference solutions, and enterprise- and carrier-grade rack mount servers.
