Webinar from NEI: How Software Developers Can Cut Costs, Boost Revenues with Smart Services

A Canton, Massachusetts-based appliance technology, products and services provider today announced that it’s hosting a free Webinar this month that’s designed to help software developers reduce costs and boost revenues – priorities for many in this slower economy.
Officials at NEI say developers increasingly are turning to smart services with operating system package management as they deploy applications as appliances.
During the Webinar – titled “How Software Developers Can Implement Smart Services to Improve Lifecycle Management, Reduce Operating Expenses and Grow Revenue” – NEI’s director of product development, Mike Slattery, will explore how OS hardening solutions and smart services and can save money by using a more comprehensive element management approach.

During the event, Slattery will also examine the benefits and return-on-investment associated with deploying element management services and OS packaging solutions tailored to the application.
According to NEI, the most successful developers have used smart services that deliver application and OS updates, push security patches, customize and back up images on deployed hardware and monitor software health. The services cut operating expenses by reducing lifecycle management costs and OS attack surfaces, and they strengthen security event management.
Independent software vendors also are expected to extend smart services capabilities to grow revenue streams, increase customer satisfaction and build product loyalty.
One NEI smart services product, for example – called “ACE Element Manager” – is designed to ensure higher availability by enabling the remote monitoring and automated health management of deployed appliances.
The solution audits the operational condition of core elements, including CPUs, power supplies and disk drives. In the event of hardware or software malfunctions, crashes, runtime errors and system boot failure, ACE Element Manager phones home and automatically generates a maintenance request, NEI officials say.
“The use of standards-based mechanisms such as SNMP and Syslog ensures full integration with today’s network management systems and provides a unified view of system-wide functionality,” the company says on its Web site. “ACE Element Manager uniquely manages the software as an image and not just a collection of software parts.”
